FIPS (Filament-Bundle-Position-Sensor)

FIPS provides contactless, high speed, high precision measurements of the average deflection of the threadline in the quench chamber and the scattering of light at the filaments. Depending on the settings of process parameters, the fibres are more or less deflected by the air flow. The positions and fluctuations of the filament bundle in the quench chamber are sensitive indicators of process state and stability. Therefore FIPS is ideally suitable for the: 
- development, control and optimisation of production processes;
- service and maintenance,
- research and investigations on the development of structure in spinning processes.

The figure demonstrates the observation and validation of a change a at a spinning machine: the effect of a new shielding of the blow box on the robustness against fluctuations of air pressure was directly visible (a windows and a door were opened in 5 m distance to the spinning machine). For comparison the improvement was also proven by the fluff rates for the different sets process parameters. The validation basing on fluff rates lasted very much longer.

In addition to the measurements of the threadline deflection, the sensor provides measurements of the intensity of light, scattered at the fibres. In the 180°- arrangement this value is proportional to the average value of the 3. power of the fibre diameters. If the density is constant the intensity is proportional to the 1.5 th power of the throughput of the pumps or the titer (see the measurements taken for gravity spinning in the figure below).

the contactless measurements increase the know-how and know-why of structure development in the production process.

Process development, maintenance:


by the instant characterisation of process state and process stability, the development of processes and the maintenance of production machines is simplified. The fluctuations of the fibres in the blow box are a very sensitive indicator of process stability.
the measurements are usable as feedback signals of control loops in the production process, allowing the production of yarns with increased uniformity.
